Magazine Genre Research

The Afar magazine was started in 2009 when Sullivan and Joseph Diaz took a 6 week trip to India and felt inspired to operate a non-profit foundation that provides scholarships for students to take educational journeys around the world. This Magazine focuses on experimental travel.

The magazines are produces in San Francisco and around 7 of them are published per year. More than 1 million people visit the Afar website every month.

This magazine cover shows an ariel shot of the tops of  mountains. The picture is from a high perspective and is very scenic. There are no adds, extra chapter titles, or authors on this front cover, but the reader can tell what the magazine is going to be about without turning the page. 

The title is in the upper left hand corner in a large easy to read font. The black letters contrast the blue and green background. I like how the title is placed so that it is one of the focal points of the page, but at the same time, it is not covering the image. 

This magazine would be important for me to consider for my project. There are less words, which entices the reader to turn the page. The reader only has a general idea about what the magazine is about and must turn the page to find out. Including less words on a cover page gives the reader a sense of mystery. I would want to include these values in my project.
